Kara Blust
When I met Kara my first year at Camp Discovery nine years ago, I was in awe of her fearlessness, she was a born leader. She never appeared to be scared of life.
Although she was younger than me, I admired the way she embraced life. No matter what was going on she managed to always maintain the notion that this too shall pass and thus was able to see the sunny side of things.
Sometimes I thought Kara took too much risk, like going on the top bunk. I know it doesn’t seem like much but it was phenomenal to me. I thought don’t you care about hurting your skin.
But EB didn’t matter when it came down to her living her life. She just lived in spite of it. I’m glad she did. Living is about taking chances and seeing what opportunities await you when you do. Even if the outcome is just to say you did it.
Kara loved helping others too. She raised money for people with EB and volunteered as a counselor at Camp Discovery. She loved Camp Discovery. She loved the fact that she could try new things and be herself without questions. And she wanted others to feel safe and have a great time at Camp, the way she did.
I think that Kara’s legacy is the way she lived her life to the fullest. If we look beyond the things in life that appear to be obstacles and use them to motivate us to do the unthinkable, then maybe we can live and embrace our chances for fulfillment; perhaps when we do that Kara’s life doesn’t have to end.
